Guilty Pleasures

My apologies for not getting around to this for a few days. I've been a bit under the weather and that has left me in a state of chaos. Thus is life, right? On we go...

In my last entry I mentioned a Guilty Pleasures Gift Swap. My dearest friend, Noelle, had written a blog entry back in December and in it she mentioned some of her guilty pleasures and prompted her readers to share some of theirs too. A few of mine were gift wrapping and snooping out childrens books in thrift stores. There were lots of fun things mentioned and in a roundabout way it came down to a gift swap. The price cap was a mere $10 and those who chose to participate were to make and/or buy things that they felt guilty about. Our swap partners were a surprise, and I ended up with another dear friend of mine, Julie! It turns out, she had me too. :")

Here is what I sent to Julie, and a little about each item:

This is the majority of the package, pictured above.

First of all, I am a sucker for Word Searches. I loved them as a child, in elementary school mostly. They were a 'treat' that teachers would give us students to do when we were well behaved or to practice our vocabulary and such. I was good at them, and I think I still am (and I base that on no knowledge of what being good at them really is -- haha!). I can typically find a lengthy list of words in less than 5 minutes. I like to time myself every once in a while, or race Hubs to see who can find the words first. Usually it's me, but I love that he plays them with me every now and then. Recently Hubs started bringing these magazine-stand word search books home for me and I've begun building a small collection of them. Ha! Guillllty! (Btw, the un-fancy-schmancy pen is from my Hubs' workplace, purposely included. He is also a guilty pleasure of mine... bow chicka wow wow! *lol*) I've found that word searches help me fall asleep, which is a wonderful side effect considering my tendencies towards insomnia. <3 Word Searches!

You'll see a set of three "Love" gift cards because I am a card-making fanatic. These are the three that I shared in my previous entry, you will note. I love sharing cards with others! I make them myself much of the time, guilty as charged. There is something special about getting a card in the mail from a friend or loved one, don't you think?

Next, you'll see that there is a gift card for Bath and Body Works (the tubes of lip gloss were not included). I had to include this because, well, I had a few extra lying around. I purchased them for a few friends for Christmas, but had some left over. I simply cannot resist their Lip Licious lip glosses. They are awesome! This also represents another weakness of mine... shopping. Yep, I'm a shopaholic. The shame! :"P I figured Julie would enjoy shopping for her own flavor of lip gloss (my favs are those shown, brown sugar and limeade), or something else if gloss isn't her thing.

And then, of course, there is the candy! As I am allergic to chocolate, I had to include some of my other favorite indulgences. I have a sweet tooth, and I feel guilty about that on a regular basis. Nibs or Twizzler's Cherry Bits are my chocolate substitutes, and I love skittles as well. Red is my favorite color, for almost anything. Yum!!

Finally, at the last minute I decided to stick in some other goodies. A baggy of birdseed. I absolutely adore birds. One of my favorite pleasures (though often guiltless here) is to lay in bed and watch the little birds flit around on the branches outside of our bedroom window. It is so relaxing, so perfect! I love their freedom, the way they flirt with one another, their sweet peeps and chirps. If I could wake to that every day, life would be grand! We (and several of our neighbors) fill our birdhouses with birdseed that these little fellas like to purge from all spring, summer and fall. They come about during the winter, too, but not nearly so often. I also sent a little birdhouse (for decorative purposes), which I painted, stained, and decorated with an "A" for Abby, Julie's little girl.

And there you have it! A few of my guilty pleasures, for all the world to see.
Now, what are some of *your* guilty pleasures? To share is to liberate! ;")

Love, Love, Love, I Want Your Love!

Just a quick photo for today...

A set of "Love" Valentine's Day cards that I made for a friend. These were included in a package for The Guilty Pleasure Gift Swap that my good friend, Noelle, put together. I'll share more of that tomorrow though. For now, I'm off to go love, love, love my little guys! Ta ta!

Taming a Rose

Ah, my little blog here has been pretty bare, hasn't it? This fresh start has been slow going for a number of reasons, but for the most part I feel that those hiccups are behind us. I'm glad to have a working computer again (ilvu Apple Store at The Gateway!) and the creative energy that I've been pining for. All too often I get into those artistic slumps where it feels like nothing artsy will come of these hands, and therefore, I cannot begin to try, let alone accomplish any creative works. It's not fun, to say the least.

But... I'm back, and I'm happy, and I have stuff to share! Just a little something for today, but I have more ideas floating about in my noggin too. I hope to share those on another day soon.

What I wanted to share with you today is the card that I made for this past week's 52-Card Pickup Inspiration, which you can read about here. The inspiration is based upon the 21st chapter of the book "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupery. When I first read about this inspiration I was happy to find that there was a link provided to the story posted elsewhere online because -- I am slightly embarassed to admit -- I had never read this story before. I have heard of it from many friends of mine over the years, but I had never taken the time to look it up and read it myself. I wish had done so sooner! Once I hopped over to that online book I simply devoured it. I couldn't stop myself. I literally sat and read the entire thing in one sitting one evening and it was such a delight. The 21st chapter was very poignant though, as it spoke of taming a fox and a rose. The line that stuck out to me the most was as reads below:

"But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose..."

I was overwhelmed with a feeling of motherly pride as that line resonated with me. I am not sure exactly why this line made me think of parenting specifically, but that is how this portion spoke to me, inspired me... for I am responsible for the two little boys in my life as I learn to 'tame' them into adulthood. I cannot imagine a day where I will not feel responsible for the two lives my hubster and I have brought into this world. Every day I find they are learning new things and it truly amazes me. I couldn't help but think of how my parents were responsible for "taming" my siblings and I as well. I am nowhere near a perfect being, but I think that given the circumstances, my mother did a wonderful job raising us, all six (yes, six kids!). I was, metaphorically speaking, quite the thorny and unruly rose growing up. Haha! It must have been so difficult to 'tame' me properly. I am over here chuckling to myself now! I think I turned out just fine though. Your opinion on that is another matter. Ha!

And moving ahead... I must say that I adore my mom, love her to bits. Thus my rose card for her. It is, to me, a "thank you" to her, for taming me well. This will be a fun surprise for her in the mail, I think. Do you agree? :")

So there you have it! My first submission for Susan's 52-Card Pickup. Please do check out the blog and maybe consider trying out this coming week's new inspiration with me, k? I'll see you here tomorrow, I hope!

PS - I love you, Mom!
